Whether you use your ATV to tear up trails or navigate your property, the last thing you want is to fall into a ditch or sink into the mud. A stuck ATV isn’t of much use to anyone, so you will want to get it out and get back to riding as soon as possible. That is why Love Motorsports of Ocoee has created this guide to getting your ATV unstuck.

1. Use a Winch

A winch is your best bet when it comes to getting an ATV unstuck. They can easily be attached to either the front or back of the quad.  From there, you can anchor them to another ATV, a heavy tree, or another vehicle and drive or tow your ATV right out of the mire.

2. Pack a Come-Along & Tow Straps

A “come-along” is a small, hand-powered winch that can be attached to your ATV using tow straps. Since it is human-powered and small enough to stow in a backpack, this is a good option for riding trips or other situations where a tow vehicle might not be close at hand.

3. Create Your Own Anchor

If there is no large tree or other heavy objects nearby to act as a convenient anchor, you may need to make your own. A small steel rod with an eyebolt or a set of ice-climbing anchors is light enough to pack easily and can be driven into sturdy, hard-packed ground to create a makeshift anchor.

4. Bring a Shovel

If you find yourself with no anchor and no easy way to make one, digging your tires out with a collapsible shovel can help your ATV get the traction it needs to be driven out of a ditch.

5. Tilt Your ATV Back and Forth

Sometimes, you may feel that a winch is unnecessary, or you just can’t use one for whatever reason. Remember that just hitting the gas will just result in your wheels spinning out without traction. To gain momentum, try rocking the ATV back and forth with your body weight. Be sure to lean into the motion. With any luck, your vehicle should inch forward until you can gain some purchase. You’ll be out of the jam in no time!
